Find your EPDMaximising the success of the European Commission’s sustainability assessment framework Level(s) was top of the agenda at an international conference held yesterday at the Knauf Insulation Experience Center (KIEXC) in Škofja Loka, Slovenia.
KIEXC has been contributing research to Level(s) through the pilot phase for the past two years and now this data — along with findings from other buildings across Europe — will be examined to assess the next steps.
Vincent Briard, our Sustainability & Product Affairs Director told the Slovenian Sustainable Building Conference: “Unfortunately, only 1% of buildings in Europe have their environmental impact assessed and Level(s) is designed to ‘mainstream’ this process.
“Following the series of pilot projects, the next steps are to review the framework based on the learnings from the pilots and in parallel to see how what we have learned can be applied to countries and regions. At Knauf Insulation we want to see an ambitious vision that paves the way for a Sustainable Performance of Buildings Directive because we believe this could play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of buildings.”
Buildings are responsible for 40% of energy use and 36% of CO2 emissions in Europe as well as generating up to 30% of European waste.
Audrey Nugent of the World Green Building Council (WGBC) European Regional Network told the conference: “To achieve the aims of the Paris Agreement and a 1.5ºC Sustainable Development Scenario it is essential that the building stock must fully decarbonise by 2050 — addressing operational carbon from buildings and embodied emissions from the entire building lifecycle.”
WGBC has launched a vision paper calling for all new buildings, infrastructure and renovation to have 40% less embodied carbon by 2030 as the first milestone.
Josefina Lindblom of the European Commission DG Environment also addressed the conference — organised as part of World Green Building Week — to update delegates on the next steps for Level(s).
Presentations were also given by representatives from the DGNB Green Building Rating System, the Green Building Councils of Italy and Slovenia, Knauf Insulation and from the Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
The conference was organised by the Green Building Council of Slovenia together with the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning and with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Germany in Slovenia, the WGBC, the Green Building Council of Italy and DGNB.
